The National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc., Oakland Bay Area Chapter (NCBW-OBAC) held their 21st annual Madam C.J. Walker Luncheon and Empowerment Forum at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis on April 19.

Themed “Cultivating Our Legacy: Intentionally Building Our Future,” the event featured keynote speaker White House Correspondent April Ryan.

Ryan acknowledged the many influences that shaped her. From the legacies of Madam C.J. Walker, the first female self-made millionaire, and Shirley Chisholm, the first woman to run for president, to Huey Newton of the Black Panthers, Malcolm X and Marcus Garvey.

“Madam C.J. Walker was a pillar of strength for all of us,” she said.

Some have dubbed the Internet of Things, or IoT, the “Intelligence of Things,” and even the “Internet of Everything.” Whatever they call it, there is no doubt that IoT has been steadily emerging and shaping our future. Put simply, IoT eliminates the need for human interaction with other humans or computers to transfer data.

It is expected that in 2020, IoT-connected devices worldwide will close to 21 billion.

When it comes to entrepreneurship in the United States, women comprise a smaller percentage of entrepreneurs and start fewer businesses than men. According to the American Survey of Entrepreneurs (ASE), only 24.5% of startups in their first two years are owned by women. Female entrepreneurs, however, have made impressive strides in recent years, showing substantial growth in both the number of female-owned businesses and number of paid employees at female-owned businesses, outpacing their male counterparts.

Seek Capital conducted a study that analyzed the largest metro areas in the U.S. in terms of the percentage of startups owned by women, the number of startups owned by women, the number of employees at female-owned startups and gross sales and receipts of female-owned startups, as well as the most active industry for female entrepreneurs. All data was sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau American Survey of Entrepreneurs.

Read on to find out which U.S. cities have the most female entrepreneurs.
